PokerStars Mobile PokerPokerStars has inaugurated a poker app in Italy that is available for free in the Italian market by downloading it on iTunes.

According to a recent study of smartphone usage in Europe, Italy ranks first among countries in the continent at 34% penetration, as well as leading the way in mobile penetration in Europe at a whopping rate of 151% as of December, 2010. Launching the PokerStars mobile client in an Italian market with those percentages of penetration makes perfect sense for the world’s largest poker site. However, only players from Italy who have a registered account with iTunes, verifiable with a major credit card and a postal address in Italy, in addition to a PokerStars.it account, can access the app.

PokerStars had previously released only two other apps, PokerStars TV and PokerStars Clock, earlier in 2011. However, the mobile poker app, which was in research and development for the past two years, is the top poker site’s first fully functioning app featuring cash and tournament play. It isn’t known at this time when the new mobile app will be available worldwide.

Other than the mobile poker client, PokerStars currently offers downloadable clients for users of both Mac and Windows that feature all the bells and whistles that players need to be competitive on the virtual poker tables.

In late 2009, PokerStars purchased Cecure Gaming, a mobile software development company that was established in 2000. Cecure Gaming had previously operated Aces Royale, a gaming brand of its own, as well as additional mobile brands, including Ladbrokes Poker Million mobile and World Poker Tour mobile.

PokerStars.it is the number one poker site in both tournament and cash games in Italy, enjoying a wide margin over competitors with a peak of slightly less than 3,500 tournament players in a 24-hour period. The Italian-facing site currently ranks as the seventh largest poker site in the world, averaging 1,640 real money cash players in a seven-day time frame.

PokerStars is currently celebrating its tenth anniversary. As part of the festivities, the world’s top poker site is featuring a $10 million guaranteed Sunday Million on the 18th of December. First place in the event is a guaranteed prize of at least $2 million, with the buy-in remaining at $215, the same entry amount as every Sunday. There are constant satellites running for this bloated Sunday Million.
