Less than a week after PokerStars announced its Players Championship, Party Poker has raised the bar with a $20 million guaranteed MILLIONS Online event.
Last week we covered the announcement of [geolink href=”https://www.pokernewsreport.com/pokerstars-announces-2019-players-nl-holdem-championship-22045″]PokerStars´ Players Championship[/geolink] – a $25,000 buy-in live event that will take place in the Bahamas in January 2019, and for which PokerStars is giving away three hundred packages as well as adding $1 million to the prize pool. Less than a week later, Party Poker has raised the bar by announcing a $20 million guaranteed MILLIONS Online event for December 2018.
What is so significant about Party Poker´s announcement is the guarantee for the 2018 MILLIONS Online event is four times that of the 2017 event held earlier this month. The buy-in will remain at $5,300 and, during the course of the year, Party Poker will give away more than $3 million in direct entries via leaderboard competitions, plus hand out free seats to the top players in its LIVE MILLIONS Main Events.
Apparently not. Excited by the success of this year´s inaugural MILLIONS Online (which easily cleared its $5 million guarantee) and provoked by PokerStars trying to grab the limelight, the site feels it has the resources to support the biggest guaranteed prize pool in online poker history. John Duthie – the President of Party Poker LIVE – certainly believes a record-breaking prize pool is in order. He said:
I love the concept of a MILLIONS leg on Party Poker, it gives us the opportunity to bring together our MILLIONS players from all over the world at the end of the year to compete for an unprecedented prize pool. I was a little nervous about trying this concept out, but players supported us this time so we should return the favor and go for a record-breaking online prize pool in 2018.
Duthie also announced the dates for next year´s event – December 1st to 4th – and that the “qualification tree” will be similar to [geolink href=”https://www.pokernewsreport.com/partys-15k-incentive-to-qualify-for-millions-online-21976″]this year´s satellite program[/geolink]. Qualifiers will start at $0.01 “Centroll” level and work their way up through $5.50 “Feeders”, Quarter-Finals (the point at which players start carrying their chip stacks forward), Semi-Finals and Finals.
More than $3 million of direct entries for the MILLIONS Online event will be given away via weekly leaderboard competitions starting from February 5th. The primary leaderboard competition (for MTTs with a buy-in of $109.00 or more) will reward the top ten players each week with a $5,300 entry ticket for the MILLIONS Online event, but you do not have to be a high-roller to benefit from the promotion.
Mid-range and Low buy-in leaderboard competitions will also be running from February, similar to the secondary leaderboard competitions [geoink href=”https://www.pokernewsreport.com/party-poker-launches-second-caribbean-party-leaderboard-20790″]Party Poker hosted in June[/geolink] ahead of it Caribbean Poker Party. These competitions will give away satellite entry tickets with a value of $22.00, $109.00 and $530.00 which will enable players to enter the Quarter-Final, Semi-Final and Final levels of the qualification tree.
Players taking part in Party Poker LIVE events will also have the opportunity to pick up MILLIONS Online entries for free. Players finishing in the top ten positions of any LIVE MILLIONS Main Event will be awarded an entry ticket on top of their prize money. Party Poker´s next LIVE MILLIONS events are scheduled to take place in Rozvadov in February and Barcelona in April.
Irrespective of your style of play, if PokerStars and Party Poker are going to go into a big money battle to attract players, you have a better chance of winning your share of it at Party Poker. As our review notes, [geolink href=”https://www.pokernewsreport.com/partypoker”]the level of competition at Party Poker is much softer[/geolink] than at other leading online poker sites. Although that generalism might not apply at the highest buy-in levels, there appear to be more opportunities to win big money prizes for relatively low buy-ins at Party Poker.
