The 2010 Heartland Poker Tour Main Event has taken place at the Downstream Casino Resort in Quapaw, OK, with US Army Staff Sergeant Jason Fennell proving victorious for his first major poker tournament win. Fennell has been deployed to Iraq on four seperate occassions and managed to battle his way through a tough field and final table to seal the win for $100,017 taking his total live tournament earnings to $119,427 and earning him the title of 2010 Heartland Poker Tour Main Event champion.
Prior to this victory Fennell’s largest cash was $7,866 when he placed 58th in a $2,000 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em event at the 2009 WSOP. As well as this he has finished 6h ina $500 buy-in event at the 2010 Venetian Deep Stack Extravaganza for $4,929 and final tabled 3 2010 WSOP Circuit Events, including a $100 buy-in tournament which he managed to win for $3,568.
At the beginning of the final table Brian Kim held 66% of the chips in play and it was assumed that he would run over the table and take down the win, however it was not to be for him.
Jackman Hy began the final table as short stack but never got a break through and found himself to be the first person eliminated, finishing 6th for $15,406.
Warren Sharp was the next player to go. The car salesman was chip leader for the tournament at the beginning of Day 2 and played great to make the final table, however a cruel river card saw him eliminated in 5th place at the hands of college student Shane Carey. Sharp held A-10 while Carey held K-10, dominating his opponent, however a King on the river crushed Sharp’s hopes of winning and sent him to the rail in 5th place for $18,488.
Missouri high-school basketball coach Pete McBride was the next player to be eliminated after he found his A-5 up against the A-K and got no help from the board, and Shane Carey joined him soon after when he got all-in against Jason Fennell. Carey held A-4 while Fennel held K-Q and the Queen on the flop was enough for Fennel who now found himself heads-up against Brian Kim. On the final hand of the tournament Kim was chasing a flush draw however it never came, and that gave Fennell the $100,017 win making him the 2010 Heartland Poker Tour Main Event champion.
