The Amateur Poker Association and Tour (APAT) are staging their premier event of the year at Nottingham´s Dusk till Dawn Poker Club from Thursday 25th of August through to Monday 29th August (Bank Holiday Monday). The World Championship of Amateur Poker is the UK´s most prestigious event limited to amateur players and follows the same format as the professional circuit – only with far more reasonable buy-ins.
That is not to say of course that the financial value of winning the Main Event is insignificant. Last year, Cardiff´s Ben Young beat a field of 425 to collect a first prize of £9,000.00 for his £100.00 entry, and the five side events which supported the Main Event provided almost £15,000.00 in prize money to those who cashed in the events.
For the 2011 World Championships of Amateur Poker, the buy-ins and prizes are going to be in Euros because of the large international field that is drawn to the event. Players from Poland, Italy, Zimbabwe and Cyprus cashed in 2010 and, with fourteen different nationalities competing in the World Amateur Team Poker Championships in the days leading up to the Main Event, many more international players are anticipated to be involved this year.
