Three Nevada casinos have requested extensions to their online poker license applications, claiming that more time is required for the testing of their systems.
According to the agenda for the forthcoming Nevada Gaming Control Board´s October meeting, the Boyd Casino, the MGM Casino and the Golden Nugget Casino have all asked for more time to get their online poker product ready to launch.
All three Nevada casinos received approval from the Gaming Control Board last November, but have been slow to get their online poker product out to Nevada residents – citing that more extensive testing is required before their respective products are ready to launch.
An extension from the Gaming Control Board will allow each of the casinos a further six months to finish testing, by which time online poker in New Jersey and Delaware will have been launched and the casinos will have the opportunity to benefit from a larger database of players.
Limited Liquidity in Nevada
One of the biggest problems facing casinos still to offer online poker in Nevada is the limited liquidity that is available. With Ultimate Poker and WSOP.com – the two sites to have launched in Nevada to date – sharing around 500 players, it is difficult to see where new players will come from within Nevada to justify the launch of further stand-alone sites.
Nevada´s online poker rules state that interstate compacts can be brokered with other States that have regulated online poker, so it is more than likely that the Boyd Casino, the MGM Casino and the Golden Nugget Casino are waiting until after online poker in New Jersey gets the green light on November 26 before launching any online poker product in Nevada.
Should the extensions be allowed – and the feeling is that Nevada regulators are happy with this – the Boyd and MGM are expected to share a player database with the Borgata Casino in Atlantic City (as all three will have their software provided by Bwin.Party) while the Golden Nugget (powered by Bally Technologies) will partner up with their sister casino on the Atlantic City Marina.
