Alex Goulder has lifted the first major British poker tournament since the end of this summer’s World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Las Vegas by picking up £77,512.50 (about $126,196/€87,819) for winning the latest Monte Carlo event at Nottingham’s Dusk Till Dawn.
Numerous big-name British pros were in evidence at the £250,000 ($407,137/€283,434) guaranteed Dusk Till Dawn event following the conclusion of the WSOP – apart from the main event, of course, which doesn’t end until early November – with Cambridge’s Alex Goulder seeing off the likes of James Clarke, Birmingham pro Stuart Fox, who finished in third place, and Peter Evans, also from Birmingham, to go into a heads-up clash with WSOP bracelet winner Matt Perrins.
Rochdale’s Perrins lifted the $1,500 2-7 Draw Lowball (No-Limit) event #9 in Sin City way back on June 4 to leave Nevada with $102,105, but couldn’t defeat Goulder in the Monte Carlo tournament – which supplied a re-entry possibility to players for the first time – back in England.
It really was the perfect ‘homecoming’ for former Dusk Till Dawn dealer Goulder, though, as he outlasted the 252-strong field to defeat Perrins in heads-up play as the event just reached its money guarantee.
Perrins had entered their head-to-head on 2.7 million chips, compared to fellow pro Goulder’s 4.9 million, but was unable to make any headway as the latter left with the title.
The final hand – which was shown as part of a trial live stream throughout the event – saw Goulder hold A♦ 10♦ to dominate the J♣ 10♥ of Perrins. The board showed K♣ 3♥ A♥ 7♥ 5♠ to give Goulder a pair of aces and the £77,512 winner’s cheque, Perrins left with £45,315 ($73,783/€51,344) to add to his Vegas winnings, while Fox picked up £27,189 ($44,270/€30,805).
