Nils Jarefjäll Enjoys Swede Smell of European Masters of Poker Success
Sweden’s Nils Jarefjäll has taken down the opening European Masters of Poker (EMOP) Season Four event at Prague’s Card Casino in the Czech Republic for a top prize of €52,277.
Jarefjäll saw off 229 other competitors to take the title after agreeing a deal with heads-up opponent Pim van Wieringen, who left with €41,963 for his runner-up spot in the €1,100 buy-in main event.
The agreement ensured that Jarefjäll would leave with at least €42,227 – when he and Dutchman van Wieringen struck the deal based on chip counts – and he then added the remaining €10,000 for his head-to-head success.
The Swede’s previous biggest cash arrived in late January of 2010, when he left the Canary Islands’ Las Palmas Casino with €2,592 ($3,644) for winning the €1,000 No-Limit Hold’em main event of the EMOP’s second season.
Martin Safarik Takes Third Place
Third place and €23,560 went to Martin Safarik, of the Czech Republic, while the top 10 was completed by Ireland’s Kevin Spillane (fourth for €14,320), Czech duo Pavel Býma (fifth for €11,080) and Roman Ondrusek (sixth for €9,000), Germany’s Sven Bahnsen (seventh for €7,850), the Emerald Isle’s Connie O’Sullivan (eighth for €6,690), Slovakian Martin Dragún (ninth for €5,540), and a third Irish player in Kevin Downing (10th for €4,620).
Jarefjäll had to overcome a 2 to 1 deficit – or just above three million to 1.5 million chips – against van Wieringen when they remained the last two in the event.
That is exactly what he did following 90 minutes’ play, during which time he demolished the Austrian’s stack before the final hand witnessed van Wieringen, with A♠ Q♥, raise – only for Jarefjäll to shove all-in.
The Scandinavian showed 3♦ 3♥ after van Wieringen made the call to see a flop of 6♣ 5♥ 5♣. That kept Jarefjäll in front, while the 2♦ turn and 7♠ river changed nothing as the first EMOP champ of the season was crowned.
The EMOP’s next stop is in Lisbon, Portugal, and runs from March 29 to April 1 at the Casino Estoril, where a €1,100 buy-in main event will be held.
